Job Description Analysis

Core Responsibilities

  • Quality assessment and ranking (RLHF) of LLM output, including accuracy, safety, usefulness and format compliance
  • Write high-quality training data and reference answers in specific fields (coding, mathematics, medicine, law)
  • Identify biases, errors, and harmful content in model output and write detailed annotations and correction plans
  • Collaborate with research teams to design data annotation specifications and quality control processes
  • Analyze the model's weakness patterns in specific fields and propose targeted training data supplement strategies

Nice to Have

  • Have experience in using data annotation platforms (Scale AI, Labelbox)
  • Learn about SFT (Supervised Fine-Tuning) and DPO (Direct Preference Optimization) techniques
  • Have a background in academic research or technical writing

A Day in the Life

  • Morning: Complete the quality assessment of a batch of code generation tasks—to determine whether the code generated by AI is correct, efficient, and safe.
  • Morning: Participate in annotation calibration meeting to align scoring standards with the team to ensure consistency
  • Afternoon: Write domain-specific "golden answers" - these will serve as reference standards for model training
  • Afternoon: Analyze a batch of model outputs marked as low quality, summarize error patterns and feed back to the research team
  • Evening: Updated annotation guide documentation to include new edge cases discovered today

Career Transition Guide

Suitable Backgrounds

  • Graduate students/doctoral students: have in-depth expertise in specific fields and are the most popular candidates for AI trainers
  • Software Engineer: RLHF who can focus on code review and programming tasksSee this career today: Software Engineer
  • Teacher/Academic Researchers: Good at assessing content quality and logical consistency
  • Translator/Editor: Experience in text quality judgment, advantage in cross-language annotation

Transition Path

  1. Step 1: Understand the basic principles of RLHF and data annotation, read Anthropic and OpenAI’s annotation guide
  2. Step 2: Try entry-level annotation tasks on platforms such as Scale AI and Remotasks to accumulate practical experience
  3. Step 3: Focus on developing evaluation capabilities in one vertical area (such as code review, mathematical reasoning verification)
  4. Step 4: Establish a domain expert profile—publish technical articles or research in related fields
  5. Step 5: Apply directly for domain expert AI trainer positions in Anthropic, OpenAI, and Scale AI

Learning Roadmap

Phase 1: Basic Cognition (January)

Learn the basic principles of model training techniques such as RLHF, SFT, and DPOUnderstand data annotation quality control methods: IAA (inter-annotator agreement), CalibrationRead annotation guides and research papers from leading AI labs

Phase 2: Practice accumulation (1-3 months)

Completed 100+ hours of actual annotation work on the annotation platformDevelop in-depth assessment capabilities in a specialized areaLearn to use annotation tools and quality control workflows

Phase 3: Expert promotion (3-6 months)

Become a senior annotator or annotation reviewer in a specific areaParticipate in the formulation and update of labeling specificationsUnderstand the model fine-tuning process and understand how annotated data affects model behavior

Common Mistakes

Wrong

Think that AI trainers are low-tech "data annotators"

Right

Senior RLHF experts require deep domain knowledge, and top talent can earn annual salaries of $180K+

Wrong

Annotation is too subjective and does not follow consistent standards of annotation guidelines

Right

Annotation consistency (Inter-Annotator Agreement) is a core capability that requires objectivity and standardization

Wrong

Only focus on superficial errors and ignore logical problems in the reasoning process

Right

Evaluating AI output requires checking both the correctness of the conclusions and the rationality of the reasoning process.
