Copilot Setup
Installation is only one part of setup. Entitlement, extension state, organization policy and editing habits determine whether Copilot actually works in your daily workflow.
#1. Check access
Confirm your personal plan or organization-assigned entitlement and policies before installing. Organization access may require an administrator's assignment.
#2. Install in the chosen IDE
The source lists VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio and Neovim; check current official compatibility for your version. After installation, verify sign-in, enabled chat features and whether the language/workspace permits Copilot.
#3. Verify a real suggestion
- Open an actual source file.
- Write a function header or explanatory comment.
- Look for an inline suggestion.
- Try accepting it with
Tabin an editor configured for that binding.
Resolve basic completion before exploring advanced features.
#Start with a small setup
Make inline suggestions, chat and your most-used language comfortable first. Enabling every feature on the first day makes diagnosis harder.
#Installed but inactive?
Check account entitlement, enabled extensions, language exclusions, organization policy and an expired GitHub session.
