Digital Nomad Visas: Check the Rules Before Planning a Stay
A digital-nomad visa is not unrestricted permission to live and work anywhere. Duration, activity, income evidence, insurance and family eligibility differ by jurisdiction.
#Establish your situation
Are you employed overseas or serving clients? How long must you stay? Will family accompany you? Can you document the required income and insurance throughout the proposed period?
#Official starting points
Thailand: consult the official e-Visa system↗ and the responsible embassy/consulate for the applicable category and documents. This guide does not infer DTV eligibility from a general remote-work label.
Malaysia: use MDEC's Digital Nomad Pass page↗ and its current application/FAQ materials to check the DE Rantau route.
Japan: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page↗, checked on 27 October 2026, describes a six-month stay without extension for this category. It also lists eligibility, income and insurance documents; the short duration should not be treated as an indefinitely renewable residence route.
#Compare four requirements
- Permitted stay versus your actual timeline.
- Rules for accompanying family.
- Income/savings/insurance evidence.
- Whether your work activity fits the category.
#Test the working arrangement first
A short trial of the location, connectivity, schedule and work routine can expose practical problems before a long commitment. Any trial still needs the correct permission for its activities; a tourist stay must not be assumed to authorize remote work.
Use the responsible authority for the final eligibility decision before paying for a long lease, travel or an application service.
