ChatGPT Tone and Style
Tone and style control different parts of a draft. Requests such as “make it professional” or “make it relaxed” are too vague when both are left undefined.
#Tone controls the speaking attitude
Examples include professional, relaxed, direct, gentle and explanatory, or strongly persuasive. Tone influences how the reader experiences the writer's attitude.
#Style controls the form
Examples include a checklist, tutorial, commentary, case study or short script. The same tone can work in different forms.
#Why style drifts
A draft may start as a personal reflection and become a generic explainer; natural opening paragraphs may turn into repetitive summaries; or social copy may suddenly sound like a white paper. Usually the prompt has not anchored the style clearly.
#Anchor the writing
#Define the writer's role
Instead of “you are an AI assistant,” specify a relevant perspective: an editor with content-growth experience, an engineer explaining technical work plainly, or a content lead preparing an internal presentation. These are writing directions, not claims about the model's real experience.
#Give positive and negative examples
Ask for a project retrospective rather than advertorial copy, or an internal experience report rather than a generic tutorial.
#Exclude repeated filler
If the model repeatedly uses “it is worth noting,” “in conclusion,” “in today's world” or “it is easy to see,” explicitly exclude those phrases.
#A practical rule
Tell the model who it is addressing, the attitude to take and the form to produce. Do not make it guess.
